Whip up the Horse

Whip up the Horse harnesses mineral pigments to evoke the spirit of ancient murals, capturing the dynamic power of galloping steeds. Set upon an earthen-toned ground, two spirited horses are delineated by vigorous lines in cinnabar red. These fluid, wind-like strokes masterfully convey the muscular tension of the horses and the swift motion of their hooves. Upon their backs, two riders are rendered with concise forms, their postures upright and spirited; their robes seem swept back by the wind, merging seamlessly with their mounts to embody the exhilaration of the ride.

Employing a classic “baimiao” ( line drawing) approach, the horses and figures are subtly filled or detailed with pure mineral white (such as shell white), leaping vividly from the red lines and dark background to form a stark, archaic focal point. Trees sketched with expressive brushstrokes flank the scene, their sparse foliage accentuating the movement and spatial presence of the central figures. The inherent texture of mineral particles and the pigments’ deep luster mimic the weathered patina and time-worn gravitas of ancient murals. This work is not only an homage to classical art but also a testament to mineral pigments’ power to crystallize the raw vitality and soaring spirit that transcends time.
