Bubble
Bubble employs the resplendent language of mineral pigments (岩彩, iwa-enogu) to immerse the viewer in a dreamlike underwater realm. At its heart, a sinuous golden koi glides effortlessly, its scales shimmering with a fluid, gem-like luminosity achieved through layered applications of mineral hues. Surrounding it, clusters of translucent bubbles in varying sizes ascend gracefully. Far from simple circles, they act as transient vessels for refracted light—their curved surfaces masterfully capturing distorted golden reflections of the fish and dappled underwater light spots, forming ever-shifting microcosms.
The work uniquely adopts an upward gaze from the riverbed. The viewer feels submerged amidst aquatic flora, looking upwards. The koi’s elegant form commands the center, while below and around it, the shimmering, unstable golden reflections of the fish—created by delicate water ripples—drift like scattered fragments of a dream. These reflections, insubstantial yet palpable, blend with the diffused surface light in the background. Rendered through the inherent granularity and subtle color gradations of mineral pigments, they evoke the elusive quality of light dissolving and dancing within water.
The physical properties of mineral pigments are showcased to their fullest potential here. The crystalline transparency of bubbles, the metallic sheen of fish scales, the soft undulation of water ripples, and the ethereal nature of reflections are all meticulously articulated through varying particle sizes, layered translucent glazes, and strategic reserves of the ground. The natural scintillation of mineral crystals under light mimics the flickering dance of underwater sunbeams. This piece captures not only the whimsical poetry of a fish exhaling bubbles but also, through the alchemy of mineral pigments, freezes the eternal interplay of water, light, and shadow. It whispers the gentle breath of life exhaled in the profound stillness of the depths.
